  1. Just for the sake of learning, I wanted to convert one .avi file into a VCD and a SVCD just to get a perspective on the difference in video quality. Using TMPGenc MPEG Editor trial version, I can do the .avi to VCD just fine, but the SVCD is giving me fits. I cannot seem to figure out how to set the file output to MPEG 2. I am probably missing something very easy, but I am just plain stuck. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks

    Could this be the problem?

This software is a trial version freely usable for 14 days.
After the installation, an Internet connection is required to receive your temporary license validation.
Limitation: Output file length is limited to 30 mn. All functions and options are usable excepted the Batch encode tool and the Project Open/Save options.
To use this software, click on the download button then run the installation program.
This software installation requires a computer reset.
You will find more information regarding this software use by reading the included Help manual accessible through the Help option of the software.

  3. Besides, do you have a mpeg2 codec for SVCD?

  4. I don't know if I have the codec or not, as I have downloaded quite a lot of software in the last several days. All I know is that I could not figure out how to convert an .avi file to SVCD, so I could compare the SVCD to the VCD in my stand alone dvd player. I really never imagined it to be this difficult, but I will admit I am a true "newbie"...........

  5. Well, I did get an .avi file into svcd format, but my dvd player won't accept it. Apparantly, it can tell the difference................

Enter your DVD player model in the field at https://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers

Make certain the unit can play SVCDs .

  7. It doesn't. Just my luck that after all of these trials and tribulations something else would bite me. I was wondering if a stand alone player can be spoofed into thinking that a svcd is actually a vcd? Kind of like bypassing the country code on a back-up playstation game. Maybe there is something in the header that normally tells the stand alone that it is a svcd can be altered so the player is spoofed?

If you're lucky, the VCD Header Trick should work.

  9. Thanks Soop. I went ahead and bought a Sony Dual Layer DVD burner last night. I decided I might be smart enough to learn this stuff after all...lol.
I hesitated in buying one trying to get a handle on this stuff, but I think I can do it to some degree anyway. .......
