Here's an interesting dilemma. I have a dual-boot system, using Win98SE and XP Home Edition. Recently, I downloaded an MPEG2 file. On my Win98SE system, VirtualDub 1.5.10 opens the file just fine. But, on my XP system, I get this error message:

However, I also have VirtualDubMod on my XP system and it opens it up fine ... just like VirtualDub 1.5.10 does on my Win98SE system. Does VirtualDub 1.5.10 have "issues" with XP that don't exist on Win98SE or in VirtualDubMod? Any correction available?

VirtualDub generally can't open mpeg2 but VirtualDubMod can. The surprise isn't the error with VDub/XP, the surprise is that VirtualDub opens mpeg2 at all on any OS...

That's what I thought, too (grin). Wish I knew what the "tweak" was. Anyhoo, on XP, I think I'll just uninstall VirtualDub since VirtualDubMod has all the tools I need. Thanks.

There's no problem having them both installed side by side. Apart from Mods ability to open mpeg2, there are other differences that makes it worth having them both at hand. Must be some mpeg2 codec or something in the W98 system that VirtualDub can use - or what you have is in fact a misnamed VirtualDubMod?

Well, I downloaded them both from the source and WinZipped them into separate directories. Did the same on my Win98SE side for VirtualDub. Not sure how I got it to work there. Anyhoo, for my purposes, VirtualDubMod will do what I need it to do.

P.S. FWIW, this is why I use a dual-boot scenario. Before I installed Windows XP on another partition, I'd heard some people say that certain "things" wouldn't work under XP that would under 98SE due to differences in drivers and other compatability issues. Glad I kept 98SE (grin). Goodness knows what other compatability issues I might find later on.

EDIT - I just tried an experiment (grin). Since my XP partition can read my 98SE partition, I created a shortcut to the VirtualDub that exists on my 98SE side and moved it to my XP desktop. Then, I opened it up and it, too, can now open up that pesky MPEG2 file, hehe. Hmmm ... wonder what it'll do if I try to open a file over 4 gigs in size. Oh well, another experiment (grin).

Well, I gave up on the W95 strain of MS OS the day I tried W2000, and have never had reason to look back. I know there are some (at least one!) that thinks w9x works better than the NT descendants, but I am not one of them!

That rules out a codec thing - it's the VirtualDub itself. As long as you're in XP, you will be able to read and write >4GB regardless of file system where VirtualDub is "installed", or rather, located.

There are times I think I should join the Flat Earth Society (grin). Believe it or not, one of my frequently clicked-on icons on my XP desktop is this one:

There are just some things I can do better or faster the "old way." 8) That gives me an edge up in some ways. While my 22 year-old son knows DOS commands as well as I do, the current generation will have no knowledge of them ... unless they make it a point to learn them on their own. I don't think schools are teaching that stuff nowadays.

Yes, I see a generation spolied by Bill & Co who thinks that if it can't be done by pointandclick, it can't be done at all.
There's nothing like using command line tools - efficient and quick, and lean on system resources.
Now that I see you're a person not afraid of typing things on the keyboard, may I suggest having a look at AviSynth as an alternative to VirtualDub? It's about the same leap as CLI vs GUI...
