  1. i'm using WinDv to capture from my camera to avi. when configuring windv if i select type 2 avi there is no sound in the finished file. if i select type 1 avi then the audio and video are half speed on playback. any ideas on what could be going on?

What are you using for playback ?

Type-2 should play back OK using virtualDub, but WMP may not like it. Type-1 is the reverse. WMP should be able to play back DV at full res and at full framerate on a 1 gig CPU or better unless you have a bottleneck somewhere. Slow drives, not enough memory or too many other processes running could all impact.

What type of system do you have ?

i'm usinf power dvd and wmp to check the playback. i tried out dvio and it seems to capture fine. i think i'll probably forget about windv and stick with dvio.

This is ridiculous. WinDV works great and is much nicer than DVIO. I've used both a lot.

For WinDV, make sure that the "Capture N-th frame" is set to 1. If it's 2 or more you will definitely get "slow motion" videos.

I use WinDV to "capture" (transfer really) type-2 AVI's all the time. They play fine with any media player.

You may also want to make sure your DV codec is OK. There is no codec used during the transfer to AVI. Only during playback.
