A freind has asked me to have a look at a computer which he has been given. He said that after a couple of days he was getting warnings to activate windows xp but ignored it.Now the computer has locked itself until it is activated. He asked me to format and re-install Windows Xp, which he has managed to get the original copy which should of been installed. This ive done. But after a fresh format and install it said staright away that there are 30 days left to activate. Is this normal and what should i tell him to do.Now he has the original Windows Xp disk and info can he just go online and register.
Thanks for any help.

Yes, it is normal.
Tell him to activate.
It is harmless and will save him grief. -
You do not even need the original XP disk handy to activate Windows. You only need it to install, then you can tuck it away in a very safe place. I make a copy to a CD-R, keep my original safe and wear the copy out.
It takes a matter of seconds to activate Windows over the Internet. If it is a pirate copy it will be picked up on, and it will not activate. I believe that when a new copy of XP is activated, it takes a "snapshot" of your system components and saves it like a fingerprint - every machine is unique. If this same copy tries to activate from a different machine, they know there is foul play and it will not activate.
Just let it do it's thing, and it will work no problem.
