the way i figure, why am i gonna half ass something and waste all that money.

BUT STILL im just a sucker, i just wanna make myself feel better by others saying yeah this happens to them too

even when i go into a retail store this happens

it's an evil trap, and they got you from the cajones from the start..bastards

The way I look at it is either go cheap or go best (well, almost best - best is always over priced). You'll never be satisified with halfway, you'll either kick yourself that you didn't fork out the little bit more - cheap and you have the satisfaction that you saved money.

List out two columns - one cheap and one best, total up each and look at the difference. If you can justify the added cost then go best, if not go cheap.

Oh don't get yourself in such a lather over it. Just tell all your buddies you paid half of what you really paid for it and make them feel bad about all the money they spent on theirs. Deflect all them guilty feelings onto somebody more deserving. Anybody but you.

only prob with that is all my buddies dont know jack about computers. they think im the biggest geek in the world. they wouldnt know the difference if i was talkin about a mmx266 or a fx-53. they would just sit there with a blank look their faces they're the type that are more concerned of what a computer looks like than what it does

i know, i was lookin at an xp2600 and a $60 asus.....but 3500+ is actually a bargain if you look at what it can do...it squashes a 2600 or even a p4 3.2 at that without a thought. so i think the extra $ might be worth it..plus with 64bit OS comin out soon it might be worth the investment

Maybe a year ago that was the best bang for the buck, but you'd be shooting yourself in the foot for not going the 64-bit route now...

I don't think so. Show me when M$ will release a full retail version of a 64-bit native OS or Adobe has 64-bit variants of their apps and I'll worry about not having native 64-bit procs. Until then it is just a marketing tool. The only possible use I can see is 64-bit *nix kernels running server and data apps in which case the 64-bit platforms will trump most 32-bit systems. I don't think that's what most of us here are looking for. Fortunately for me I can have either since my board supports "fake" 64-bit Xeons

Spend more on your PSU. Get an Antec NeoPower 480W and a nice Antec P160 case. It's only more than double what your current choice cost

I did the same thing with my new system. At first I was looking at cheaper solutions for a new workstation but then ended up spending a lot more on it. I'm certainly glad I did though. You should be able to do quite a lot on that system as it is. I didn't see memory listed though?

spend more on the PSU and case?? now your just pilein it on

im just gonna use a gig of my corsair pc3200 for that one for now...and leave 512 in this system. cause if i start lookin at ram right now that basket price is gonna get ugly. i'll save for the ocz el dual.

but see now u got me thinkin again, this is noooo good. i dont wanna see that basket price get out of control

I guess what I was trying to get at was attempting to point out that the A64 platform provides future-proofness AND excellent 32-bit performance (nice jab at the Intel Xeon's "64-bit memory extensions" crap ). The Athlon FX-55 recently beat the piss out of Intel's best... and it was like $150 cheaper!

Forget the RAM then if you've got good PC3200 already. I'm assuming you've got 3 sticks of 512MB then? Use two of the 512MB sticks for the new machine then.

What's with the SATA drive? Price is nice on it I guess.

The PSU is more important than the case. I'd still push that big Antec PSU and get whatever case you want. I was suggesting the Antec P160 case as it has been the quietest case I've ever witnessed. Even with two big HSF it's still very silent.

I actually like that price for all that hardware. Almost makes me want to put together a single-CPU system

You may perhaps want to wait for a PCI-E system board? That way you can save up while you wait, and add a PCI-E video card in that cart too
