Hi... I'm back after a long hiatus
I have a question about speed fan... How do I actaully get it to lower my fan speeds?
I try to lower those percentages, but the fan speed does not change. The CPU fan is the stock AMD Athlon XP 2500+ fan, and the other ~2500RPM fan is a Coolermaster 82 something-or-other, and it claimed to have variable speed. Both are plugged in directly to the motherboard.
I would like to have dynamic fan speeds depending on case/system temperatures. I'm pretty sure Speedfan can do this... if not, is there an alternative program I can use?
Thanks in advance.

Use a temperature gauge, small piece of inexpensive hardware to regulate it. No need to bog CPU with software.

A temperature gauge won't let me automatically, dynamically change fan speeds according to the temperatures of specific components or just general system temp.

Why not? I've seen some that change based on temperature, as judged by the thermometer attached to them.

If the motherboard supports variable speed fans then it should be adjusting the speed on its own from the BIOS without a software interface. If it doesn't then you'll need a hardware fan controller like the Digital Doc 5 or similar. I wouldn't try messing with the board's fan speed settings though.

Have you tried Motherboard Monitor? It allows dinking with the fan settings:

TY, lordsmurf, I'll look into what I think is called a 'rheobus'.
rallynavvie, do you mean there is an option in the BIOS for fan speeds?
Capmaster, I use MBM, I will go check the options now. -
Depends on the options in the BIOS. Usually fan speeds off motherboard headers are controlled by a hardware monitor onboard, not via software. You can't always change these settings but I'm sure there are BIOS out there where you can.

I thought SpeedFan was known for this, lowering for fan speeds... why can't I do it? -
Have you checked that the fans are correctly connected on the motherboard.
I have been having fan speed problems on a new system.
The CPU fan would start at 3000 rpm but when the temperature increased slightly the CPU fan would increase to 5500 rpm (very noisy). On investigation I found that the supplier had plugged the CPU fan into the Power Supply Fan adapter and the Power Supply Fan was plugged into the Chassis fan adapter.
By plugging the fans into the correct adapters, I now get the CPU fan starting at 1800 rpm and increasing to only 3500 rpm when the CPU heats up.
So if you haven't checked, it's a good idea to do so, if they are incorrectly plugged then the speeds will be way off and may not be changing as expected. -
Yeah, the fans are plugged directly into the motherboard, in CFAN1 and SFAN1, respectively.
