used DVD shrink to encode the stepford wives (my copy) then i downloaded the trial version of Nero burning rom. I have the DVD A04 drive and i have it in an external enclosure with it using my USB 2.0 interface in my Inspiron 8600. This is the first time i have used this external drive to burn and i get 1% on my burning process and then it looks like my burning stops - the drive busy light is not on but on the screen it still is counting down like it is burning?!? it says it is on action: Track - Can anyone help? or guide me somewhere i can troubleshoot this?
i have used this drive in my desktop flawlessly but i got a new drive in my desktop so i put this drive in an external enclosure and hooked it up to my laptop - is there anything i need to do first since i hooked it up externally to make it work with my laptop correctly? Is that the problem? The media i have has worked fine with this drive in my desktop so that is not the problem.

I started to backup my DVD's about 9 months ago. At first I did experience some problems because my burner was installed in an external USB2 enclosure. Having the burner in that enclosure caused many coasters, I do not think that External USB problem (SCSI abort command) has been overcome to date. It was only writing 1k lead in and then procuded SCSI command abort. I removed the burner from the external enclosure and installed it in my tower. That move has overcome all of my problems.
You might try changing the format of the drive your burning to to NTFS, a friend of mine says that overcomes the problem.
I have a Pioneer 106D Burner and now have no problems at all using the following method.
1. Use Shrink to re-author and backup to a single ISO file. (format of drive NTFS)
2. Then burn with DVD Decriptor.
Your drive should be formatted NTFS to enable you to create a single ISO file using DVD Shrink, then burn with DVD Decrypter. If your drive is formatted Fat32 then you will need to split the ISO images into 1 gig files and then burn with DVD Decrypter.
No coasters, no skips or freezes and a backup that is hard pick from the original DVD, more importantly, I use the cheapest DVD media I can find which at this time are 4X-R Princo which are considered rubbish by many members of this site. -

budz, i was also going to mention using Firewire but i guess you beat me to it.
Ive known several issues where many people have had problems with using USB2 with external burners. Firewire is alot efficient and works well. -
I also have external usb2 writer when using laptop. While using shrink disable burn with nero and save to hard drive then burn with nero after. if you still get burning problems try resetting laptop before burning disc
