Using Nero 7.10.x to burn copies of a home movies dvd (friend of a friend caught a 729 lb marlin off the coast of Mexico!)...having some weirdness.

I'm using the DVD-Video mode for the compilation, and I have the files in the VIDEO_TS folder. When I start the burn, I'm getting wildly inconsistent burn times, especially for the Lead-In. One time it might take 2m45s before it shows that it's burning a Track, and the next time it might take 1m30s. Also, each burn gives me different types of noises coming from my burner. Most of the noises are some kind of constant spin-up/spin-down/spin-up/etc. during the Lead-In, then the first Track starts to burn and the spin noises become more like what you'd hear from the burning process. The other noises are little ka-chunk noises, like the disc is jostling around in the tray. Very bizarre. Anyone ever heard constant spin up/down/up/down noises like this?

Could it be that my PSU isn't powerful enough to drive the burner? I think I have a 350w psu that came with my CollerMaster case, driving my C2D 2.4, 2gb of ram, single physical hd, and an evga 7600. The pc runs pretty well otherwise. The burner is a LG model.

My last two burns failed with a message about "laser focus" or something like that. The previous eight burns tonight were successful, but some of them took over 15m, while others took 5m...all are the same compilation in Nero...just clicking the Burn Again button on the Success dialog.

    Thanks!
    Gary

Sounds like your LG drive may be dying. My 4163 behaved this way before I retired it.
