    Why is that? Is this a known limitation for that version, and is there a fix in a newer one?

    Oh come on now, I can't be the only fool that's tried to join 248 avi clips together with an AviSynth script before, can I?

    Yes, that's a known limitation in v2.08. I think this is also the case for v2.55, though I'm not 100% sure. Why don't you try it?
