I downloaded a modded version of FC2 but its an 800-something MB BIN/CUE that won't write to a DVD or CD. Isn't there a way I can copy the images (I can probably get Alcohol or Nero to make an ISO if needed) to a hard drive and then put that HDD in the other PC and get it to boot from those images and install to the other drive? I can't think of any other way other than perhaps a network boot somehow to install this damn thing.

  2. Not knowing what FC2 is,

I would do an overburn to a 800mb CD

    or

Change the extension from bin to img
    Open it in Winimage
Take out some stuff thats not needed
    Burn to a CD

    or

Mount with image tools and do the same

You could open it up in something like Ultra ISO (free download - trial period) and copy the files to your hard drive and install from your hard drive.

Just burn the cue file in Nero.

Then just pop in the bootable cd and you are on your way.

So it's Redhat's free distro version or is this something new and different from RH9 (8 or 9?)

It is more like Red Hat 11.

After Red Hat 9, Red Hat decided to only support the enterprise version.

They turned the free version over to a bunch of developers and it was renamed Fedora Core.

They now have Fedora Core 3 Test 3 out now.

  7. It's been a while since I've run Redhat. I always hated their default install of gnome. I pretty much have stuck with Mandrake since ver 6

    You aren't missing much.

The only part I like about the new version of Fedora is it has firefox built in now.

Actually it's a 970MB BIN/CUE so I think a CD overburn is out of the question. Nero won't allow it to be written to either a CD or DVD for some reason. Alcohol won't even allow me to write it to either or convert it to an ISO.

Now if I get it converted to an ISO and write it to this old hard drive how do I format the drive to boot to the ISO copied to it? Just a FAT32 partition with the ISO as the only thing on it? Do I put the drive I want to install to as IDE Primary and put the other drive on another channel and tell it to boot from that one first? After that I can choose which volume to install the OS to in the install GUI I'm guessing (if it's like plain FC2).

If I can figure out how to do a network boot that may work too. How do you configure the shared directory the image is located in for a network boot, or is it even that simple?

This is a hacked version of FC2 with MythTV and a bunch of other supporting apps built into it as well as some file server extensions that a friend was playing with. I'd like to give it a try for my HTPC/file server project before buying MCE.

You are only burning the cue file so it should not matter.

You should also get a different version.

FC is now FC3 Test 3 and is about to become Final.

Can't really get a different version unless we convince the guy who compiled this one to update it. Don't think it's going to happen. It also won't change the fact that it won't burn to a DVD.

Once converted to an ISO how can I boot from it from a hard drive?

I don't think you can, but it will at least get you to the point where you can strip some stuff out and make it small enough to fit on a CD
