I used to use an old Aver TV98 to transfer my VHS tapes to DVD, but several of them are old and don't play that great, so I wanted to upgrade to something with TBC (which my VCR doesn't have)
Since the TV98 worked fine, I went with the Ultra 500 since it also had hardware mpeg2 and the TV tuner.

My problem is that the captures (done in either MPEG or DVD mode) have lines of blocky artifacts randomly thru it and the audio has a 'chirping' noise in it. I'm using their Ultra TV app.

AVI captures using IuVcr come out fine. I tried to add a frame showing a problem. This just shows 1 band of junk; sometimes there are several.

I also am in email contact with their tech support, but so far they haven't provided anything but trivial suggestions.

I'm interested in the answer to this?

Final resolution was that I returned it.
Aver support never really addressed my problems; they asked me to run patches for software that I didn't have installed and for a motherboard that I didn't have. Then they closed out my tech request.

I found someone else who had the card and he had the same experiences with both the card and Aver support.

I ended up getting a Leadtek PVR2000, and after downloading the latest drivers & software (newer than what's given with the board). I've had good results with the hardware Mpeg2 encpoding.

I you may have read my earlier posts on my AVER 550 - What a waste of money, time and energy. Support was totally unsatisfactory. Like you, I had to return it because after multiple attempts, I could not get it to work properly.

I certainly wish it had performed as advertised. From the on-line description of features, functions and specs, it looked great; in reality - it stunk out loud.

Better choice I'm thinking is the Hauppauge 250 or 350 - now at lower prices
