    We currently have the following DVD formats:
    • * DVD-R
      * DVD+R
      * DVD-RW
      * DVD+RW
      * DVD-RAM

      So what format is a commercial DVD? How can you tell what a DVD's format is and if it's dual-layer. Are there tools which can do this?

    Store bought DVD's are DVD-ROM format. MOST commercial DVD's are dual layer...in my opinion.
    DVDDecrypter can tell you whether it is a DVD5(single) or DVD9(dual) the quickest...again...in my own opinion.

    DVD-ROM pressed disc.
    The data is DVD-Video format.

    Most "big budget" releases are DL. Most others are SL.
