im trying to create a simple 1 page menu with 4 links, but i want an image to appear next to each link when it is selected

kinda like this (> represents the arrow)

item 1
>item 2
item 3
item 4

im thinking that the actual link will be the image ? is this right ? as ive managed to get kinda close to this working but it wont show the image, just the colour that ive selected from the colour map, how can i get it to show the image when selected and nothing when it is not selected ??
