    Hi.

    A newbie question.
Search functions used but no clear answer was found.

I have PCM 48000 Hz 16 Bit and would like to make an AC3 stream (for DVD authoring) out of it.

Which tool works best and offers most AC3 encoding options?

    TIA

Personally, I use the encoder that comes with TMPGENC DVD Author. There are some free ones, like BeSweet and HeadAc3e, which are trickier to use, and have some compatibility issues, it just depends on how much you want to spend and how much time you want to put into it.

(edit) Oh, never mind...I'm not sure why this one is in breach of rules, so I won't touch it.

    Hi geohei,

I second maek - ffmpeggui and an authoring app that support elementary streams. It's quick and simple.

I know for ffmpeggui (and probably the others mentioned) that the output is only 2 channel AC3 - not full 5.1 (6 channel). To do this is a lot more involved, requiring a 6 channel source (usually) and costly.

But, if you just want to save space then AC3 from ffmpeggui is good.

As for authoring, the TMPGEnc DVD Author that Forum Troll refers to is the latest version that comes with the AC3 encoder. There are earlier versions that don't have this.
There is some corner of a foreign field that is forever England: Telstra Stadium, Sydney, 22/11/2003.

I second ffmpeggui - never had a problem with this, even if there are claims that the AC3 produced is slightly off standard, making a few Panasonic players fall over...

Oh, in that case, I retract my edit. Yes, you won't find many arguments against ffmpeggui. And it's free free free. My Sony player has no problem with it whatsoever and the PowerDVD platform on my computer doesn't find issue with the file either. You just need to make sure that you have someway of incorporating the elementary audio stream with an elementary video stream through the use of a DVD Authoring program like dvdauthorgui (my current favorite) or other software that can multiplex (join) the streams.

I can't speak for Panasonic players though...has anyone else heard of AC3 compatibility issues (using ffmpeggui) with players? It may effect his "encoder of choice."
