  1. Hey
I need to convert a small mellody that is in WAV format to MIDI format, so i can have a special ringtone on my phone.

Does anyone out there know a program that will do this.

    Thanks

  2. i dont think its possible. midi is basically a bunch of numbers that make different sounds, Wav is much different.

find sheet music instead, then just make a midi file with noteworthy composer.

There are some programs that attempt WAV to MIDI conversion (just do a google search on 'wav to midi'), and you can get some acceptable results if you're just converting a single instrument playing single notes but anything more complex will probably just produce a garbled result.

Converting analogue waves to digital instructions is at best guess work, the midi file contains instructions such as, instrument code, pitch, note type, sustain length, volume, channel info, and so on, for one or many instruments (the same as you would find on sheet music). Seperating and interpreting all this information from a single wav file is quite an achievement.

But try it anyway, since all you want to do is create a ring tone, you could be successful - there are some freeware and demo programs available. (see google).

  5. It will depend on your source of music. I tried quite a few wav --> midi programs and none of them gave acceptable results... even with a single instrument piece.

It's about as complicated (to the computer) as "speech to text" conversions. It barely works. Under ideal circumstances, like no background noice & cetera. And that comparision is for one instrument, playing one note at a time. Imagine an orchestra - that'd compare to 10 people talking simultaneously. Now try the speech-to-text app...

Find the piece in MIDI format.
