  1. Hi everyone. One simple question:

I want to buy a new DVD player. I live in Brazil, and I'm inclined on two players:

    1 - Philips DVP-530

    2 - SONY DVP-NS575P

They both play DVD, DVD+R/RW, DVD-R/RW, VCD and SVCD and are progressive scan

Now the question: does it make any difference to buy a progressive scan dvd if you television set DOES NOT HAVE progressive scan?

I have a 28" Widescreen TV (Philips 28PW6521/78R), and it does not say anything about progressive scan.

    Anyone?

  2. It only works on digital TV's. I'm not sure if yours is digital but if is a regular analong TV, progresive scan won't work.

The progressive scan video output will only work with TV's which are capable of displaying a progressive image (480P for DVD). In the USA almost every widescreen TV is capable of progressive scan. I don't know about Brazil.

Hoewer, every progressive scan DVD player can be set to output non-progressive (interlaced) video. So they will all work with your TV.

I would recommend the Sony DVD player. Also, to get the best picture, you should use component video cables to connect the DVD player to your TV.

  4. The Philips might be region free by entering a few numbers on the remote. Then you can watch movies from all over the world.

  5. Thanks for all the replies guys! I do use component cables with my TV, and the difference is astounding if compared to regular RCA cables... I also use digital coaxial audio - is the optical better?

Finally, I am more inclined to buy the Philips one, exactly for the reason appoited by GabeB - I already have the necessary region codes... and I haven't found them for the SONY player.

    Thanks again

  6. For the audio, I can't tell the difference between the two. My audio equipment is under a 1000 dollars total so maybe on a high end system there is a difference. Both cables output the same exact information.
Sony players are generally not region free.
