This is kinda an "apples&Oranges" question.
I've been to 47 of the 50 states(Oregon,OK and Alaska).
My vote goes to Utah.
Worst MS,Il or Iowa.

I'm not as well-traveled as you doc, but I've been to 24 of the 50 (Been to: Ca, Nv, Az, Nm, Co, Ne, Ks, Sd, Ok, Tx, Mo, Ia, Mn, Wi, Il, Mi, In, Oh, Pa, Ny, Nj, Vt, Ga, Fl) and New Mexico gets my vote.
I've never been to Alaska either, and I'll bet it would get my vote if I had been there. But limiting it to where I've been, it's right here -
I'm not well travelled, but would have to say Hawaii (Kauai) and Northern California rank as some of the most beautiful areas. I've always wanted to go to Montana and ride horses against the backdrop of those beautiful mountains.
Alaska would certainly get a vote from me. Just sheer raw beauty.
Begin Dream ...
I'd quit my job and move to Montana and work riding the range, mending fences and sleeping under the stars.
If I were only 20 years younger and single ...
...End Dream -
AZ, CA & UT in no particular order. The worst has to go to Kansas, not that there was anything wrong with it. Wasn't anyhting good either, wasn't anything at all really.

Montana of course. It is by far the best looking state because I am there and I am good looking.

Whatever state the US side of the International Peace Park is on gets my vote. It's either Wyoming, Idaho or North Dakota, can't remember exactly where we crossed.
California was good with its national parks, Wyoming was really beautiful as well, camping by the side of a creek. The Utah country side was good with its mix of snow and desert.
Worst state was Seattle, nothing but rain the whole time I was there.
EDIT: Montana was the US state with the International Peace Park. -
I think Tennessee is the most beautiful state I've been too.
But then again, I'm not exactly well traveled. OH, IN, MI, PA, FL, GA, OK, VA, WVA, KY. -
I've only been to a few states but the one that left the biggest impression on me was New Mexico, I just like driving out of a cold/cool moutian striaght into a warm/hot desert.

New Mexico.
Arizona, Utah and Alaska would have a kick-ass battle for 2nd place. -

New Mexico really starts getting interesting as you hear west from Texas and get to Santa Rosa or so. Then the terrain starts going up, and up, and up some more. Going through Tijeras Canyon and coming out into Albuquerque and seeing Mount Taylor in the distance, and the stark desert landscape that contrasts with what you've seen east of the Sandia Mountains ...well, that's a humbling experience
Hey, I should write for the chamber of commerce, huh?
The caverns are something to see though. Unbelievable that in the old days they entered with ropes -
Montana...Glacier National Park in particular. I return as often as I can.
No, I'm from Iowa. I only work in outer space.
