This is kinda an "apples&Oranges" question.
I've been to 47 of the 50 states(Oregon,OK and Alaska).
My vote goes to Utah.
Worst MS,Il or Iowa.

I'm not as well-traveled as you doc, but I've been to 24 of the 50 (Been to: Ca, Nv, Az, Nm, Co, Ne, Ks, Sd, Ok, Tx, Mo, Ia, Mn, Wi, Il, Mi, In, Oh, Pa, Ny, Nj, Vt, Ga, Fl) and New Mexico gets my vote.
I've never been to Alaska either, and I'll bet it would get my vote if I had been there. But limiting it to where I've been, it's right here

I'm not well travelled, but would have to say Hawaii (Kauai) and Northern California rank as some of the most beautiful areas. I've always wanted to go to Montana and ride horses against the backdrop of those beautiful mountains.
Alaska would certainly get a vote from me. Just sheer raw beauty.
Begin Dream ...
I'd quit my job and move to Montana and work riding the range, mending fences and sleeping under the stars.

If I were only 20 years younger and single ...
...End Dream -
AZ, CA & UT in no particular order. The worst has to go to Kansas, not that there was anything wrong with it. Wasn't anyhting good either, wasn't anything at all really.

Montana of course. It is by far the best looking state because I am there and I am good looking.

I grew up in Charlotte, NC and you can't tell me that Charleston (before the Hurricane) and Myrtle Beach are not worth noting. Come on !!!Originally Posted by tgpo

NC and SC are all right, The Outer Banks in NC had the best beaches I was ever at. I enjoyed because it wasn't packed to the gills with 5 billon people. The only thing that even came close was Assateague in Maryland.Originally Posted by Ripper2860
Myrtle Beac, eh it's tourist beach. Once you seen one you have seen them all. -
Whatever state the US side of the International Peace Park is on gets my vote. It's either Wyoming, Idaho or North Dakota, can't remember exactly where we crossed.
California was good with its national parks, Wyoming was really beautiful as well, camping by the side of a creek. The Utah country side was good with its mix of snow and desert.
Worst state was Seattle, nothing but rain the whole time I was there.
EDIT: Montana was the US state with the International Peace Park. -
I think Tennessee is the most beautiful state I've been too.
But then again, I'm not exactly well traveled. OH, IN, MI, PA, FL, GA, OK, VA, WVA, KY. -
I've only been to a few states but the one that left the biggest impression on me was New Mexico, I just like driving out of a cold/cool moutian striaght into a warm/hot desert.

Upstate is nice, e.g. Caesar's Head, Table Rock, Lake Jocassee. :POriginally Posted by tgpo

Upstate NY is my top choice -- Finger Lakes Region .... As William Seward once said (Sec of State to A Lincoln) -- "Skeaneteles is the most beautiful lake in world".
-
Hello,
Boy that's a BOLD statement. Let me see, there's Lake Superior, any of the other Great Lakes, Crater Lake (never been there just know its famous), Great Salt Lake, and countless more around the WORLD. I think to claim any one is greater than another is frivaless and quite useless. It can be BEAUTIFUL but to claim supremacy is quite impossible I'm afraid.Originally Posted by DVD_Ripper

Upstate NY is nice alright. I was doing some work at Plattsburgh ..right on Lake Champlain. I took the ferry across from Burlington, Vermont. That whole area is gorgeous. Just too bad I wasn't there in the fall. It's supposed to be breathtaking.Originally Posted by DVD_Ripper
But it's not the prettiest. I would have to say Cloudcroft, NM or Lincoln County, NM is prettier. -
You were in the Adarondack (sp) Mnts -- not close to Finger Lakes area of Upsate. Just west of Syracuse starts the Lake Region with Skeaneateles and spans west to Canadaigua NY. Beautiful area... vinards, lakes, waterfalls (the longest waterfall drop east of the Mississippi is located in an Ithica area) Never been to NM so really hard for me to compare... but I bet its apples and oranges... two different 'beautifuls' completely.Originally Posted by Capmaster

New Mexico.
Arizona, Utah and Alaska would have a kick-ass battle for 2nd place. -
New Mexico would probably be on my list too but I only hit the Southwest corner, Carlsbad Caverns. The best part about the Southwest is variety of landscape and the natural formations. Pennsylvania would be on my list too but I live here. The fall can be outstanding, there's so many variety of trees the colors are very varied.Originally Posted by indolikaa

I've only seen about 15 miles of NM.Seems I might have to check out more.Is it that much different than AZ?

It's in the southeast corner.Originally Posted by thecoalman

The entire eastern 1/3 of the state north to south is pretty damn boring - very much like the Texas panhandle. Flat, and nothing much to see. New Mexico really starts getting interesting as you hear west from Texas and get to Santa Rosa or so. Then the terrain starts going up, and up, and up some more. Going through Tijeras Canyon and coming out into Albuquerque and seeing Mount Taylor in the distance, and the stark desert landscape that contrasts with what you've seen east of the Sandia Mountains ...well, that's a humbling experience
Hey, I should write for the chamber of commerce, huh?
The caverns are something to see though. Unbelievable that in the old days they entered with ropes

Montana...Glacier National Park in particular. I return as often as I can.
No, I'm from Iowa. I only work in outer space.
