What's the best way so I can get the right aspect ratio (would like the 720x480 resized to 640x480) all I seem to get is black bars added to a horizontally stretched picture.

The output file size isn't so important, would like to get 8-10 movies (@20-30 min each) per DVD to play on mpeg4 STB.

  2. Using mencoder engine: hit autocrop first, then set width to 640, then set aspect ratio in the Autosize popup (possibly 2.35:1 or whatever you want your playback ratio to be), click "Best" for best bitrate, and encode.

Thanks - the encoded files came out to just over 400mb each and look just as good as the original DV files.

Just a minor bug report (using .9p version) - after choosing the XviD (mencoder) engine, the ffmpegX progress window displays "encoding to h.264" but I still get a XviD 1.0 file out of it, so just the display is wrong.

Didn't ffmpegX used to support encoding directly from the mov reference file in the iMovie project folder?
