I'm a pretty new Mac user (moved from Windows about 3 months ago)

Is it possible to export an iMovie (ver. 7.1) project as a DivX file?

I installed the latest DivX codec from the DivX website but can't find any option in iMovie to export as a DivX file.
I have found many posts and even videos explaining how to do this but using previous versions of iMovie (i.e. ver 5) that don't match with the current one.

The purpose is to play the videos in my DVD player. I've tried several other export formats but the player doesn't recognize them.

My setup just in case is:
    Macbook
    OS X 10.4.11
    iMovie'08 (ver 7.1)

    I'd really appreciate any help.

    Thanks

Hello and welcome to our world!

the easiest thing to accomplish what you wish is
to get Toast titanium 8 ( if running leopard make sure
it is patched to version 8.03).

You export your finished movies from iMovie,
    as Quicktime .mov files. Open
Toast 8, and select under the video tab,
    "Burn DIVX Disc".
    then, you
drag and drop the .mov files into the open window,
and click burn DVD ( the green button) in the left corner.

Once done, you have a divx compatible disc ready to play.

I'm not aware of any way to directly export from iMovie 7 to DivX. You first must export to a file that either Toast or the DivX Converter application can read, such as what terryj suggests.

  4. There is an easier way. And you don't have to export your movie from iMovie at all. Both Toast and Visual Hub recognise an iMovie project as if it were a self-contained video file. Just save and close your iMovie project and drag it directly into the Toast or Visual Hub window and you can export directly as DivX from either of these.

The only problem I have found with this method is that, if your iMovie project is 16:9 aspect ratio, both Toast and Visual Hub read it as 4:3. So, it is necessary to manually specify the exact horizontal and vertical resolutions you want the DivX to be, for example 720:400 or 640:352 or whatever.

    Really simple. Good luck.

That works with Toast and iMovie HD but not with the iMovie that's part of iLife 08. The new one doesn't have a project file that Toast can recognize. I don't know about Visual Hub.

  6. Thanks for that Frobozz. Hee hee, I am so glad I didn't upgrade iLife 08 when I had the opportunity. I really like having the ability to drag my projects straight into Toast and Visual Hub.

I don't see where that is possible in the new iMovie.

    Thanks everyone for your answers

Surfmonkee, I don't see any divx option either. May be it was there in previous iMovie versions but not in 7.1. Anyway, it's good to know that I wasn't missing an option hidden somewhere.

I'll take a look at the applications you guys have suggested.

    cheers.
