  1. Hi,

I have (like many of you) loads of films and TV shows in .xvid/.divx (avi) format, and I want to convert these to .mp4 for my iPhone.

I use this tool which is great:
    http://www.convertavitomp4.com/

    but it wont batch convert.

    I've tried this tool:
    http://www.xilisoft.com/ipod-video-converter.html

which does batch convert, but seems to force my videos into a pre-defined resolution based on the profile I use, I just want it to convert it to .mp4 at the same size as the original - the tool I mention at the top does this.

So what tools do you guys use - basically I want my .avi files converted to play well on my iPhone.

    Thanks

    Floob.

Two easy to use tools come to my mind:
    1) Format Factory can do batch conversion with the default resolution. Go to ALL to Mobile Device and select an Iphone profile. Then set the parameters to default (the same as original).
    2) Also, Any Video Converter Freeware can do such a batch conversion.

  3. iphone isn't compatible with every resolution, so most programs will resize to a resolution that is compatible.

  4. Thanks for your replies.

I'm going to check out the tools above.

The res I've got is 576x320, is this not an appropriate size for the iPhone?
Does anyone know the recommended ratio for videos on the iPhone?

  5. I use Handbrake to convert divx encoded AVIs to H.264 MP4 files for my iphone. Its very quick and easy to set up for batch encoding especially for the iphone.

Iphone has 480x320 resolution, and it is better to set this in the conversion settings (higher resolution will result in a larger converted file and will not bring an increase in video quality).
Indeed, Handbrake can do the job as well, especially if the source video is in avi format. I've hesitated to recommend it, because you will need to have Net Framework 3.5 installed on your PC to be able to use this tool.
Also, sometimes it is quite stubborn and doesn't want to convert mkv to mp4 videos without a clear explanation...

  7. I see, but if my file is 576x320 I'm better of keeping that res as any reduction would be less than the iPhone could handle, i.e. the 320 would be lower.

    Does that make sense?

Again, if you want, you can just keep the default resolution and leave the phone to make the best fit to screen...
Iphone can play videos that have less than 480x320 resolution.
Reducing 576x320 resolution to 480x320 should give you 2 choices: either crop the extra horizontal pixels or have a black borders. I'm not sure how iphone handles strech/zoom functions, so that you can view videos without black borders....

I recommend using handbrake with a flexible scripting language such as biterscripting ( http://www.biterscripting.com ). That gives one a lot of programming control over specifying input files, output files, conversion parameters, etc.
