    I to have a Pentium 4 3.0 CPU, but mine idles anywhere from 44 degrees celsius to 48 degrees celsius depending on the time of day. If you've noticed I have asked the people here a few times, they all said that was well within the limits. You really have nothing to worry about, read up on Pentium 4s special 60 degree celsius feature. :P

  3. Budz,

    I called intel to find out exactly what my P4-2G CPU should act like. Each CPU is different in its idle and max temp ranges.

    My P4-2G was 36idle and would 'shut down' at 76 (I believe) -- With CPU intensive apps I'm seeing no higher than 50's.

    The Intel P4 "Prescott" CPU runs hot . Call Intel and check you CPU range.

  4. Here is some excellent software which actually works at actively lowering your temperature during normal usage... lower idle temps: http://www.cpuidle.de/

    I'm going to test that program now, it almost seems to good to be true. I think I should call Intel about my temperatures, I never thought about that.

  6. while there are software progs(TSR's) that will throttle the CPU, i prefer using the BIOS to accomplish this. you can set a range of temps in which your CPU will either be slowed (throttled), or choose a point where the system will be shut down to prevent damage to the CPU.

    the core you P4 uses will dictate the power dissapation, and heat issues as well. as mentioned by DVD_ripper, the Intel P4 with prescott cores run hotter than those using the northwood core.

    kind of old news for alot of geeks/enthusiasts, but a video that shows how the Pentiums deal with heat, and why AMD now uses thermal protection as well:

    http://www12.tomshardware.com/images/thg_video_1_cpu_cooling.zip

    some video cards now have this type of protection now as well.

    Since I've come across the post about CPUIdle I've done nothing but read about it and test it. Alot of people seem to be having success with it, however, I am not one of those people. It would not recognize Motherboard Monitor 5.3, and no matter how hard I tried I couldn't configure it correctly. I've been looking for similar programs with better support but I have yet to run in to any luck.

    Finally figured out what sensors sensored what, and got everything configured correctly. Either Motherboard Monitor or my BIOS is off, I'm willing to bet its Motherboard Monitor though.

    Motherboard Monitor:
    Case = 33* C
    CPU = 35*C

    Considering I have a small case with terrible cooling, 35* C is to cool. CPUIdle doesn't seem to have much of an effect. It says that my CPU usage is 100% but it isn't using nearly as much memory as expected. Could work for others, doesn't work for me.

  9. what motherboard are you using?

    Thanks for all the replies to my post. I'll check out that cpuidle proggie & will call Intel tomorrow. On another forum site I was told 41c was ok.

    Hah! I called Intel today and was told by someone who could barely speak english that my cpu temp of 41c was normal. I asked if I would be voiding the 3 year warranty if I didn't use the intel heatsink fan. The barely speaking english dude said Yes the warranty would be void.

    Haha, I always get foreigners whenever I need phone support. Calling Linksys for support has been one of the biggest mistakes I have made in a long time. :P

    lmfao I forgot to mention before actually speaking to the barely english tech dude. I had the pleasure of talking to a customer rep chick who I could barely understand because she kept repeating herself to me while I tried to get in a few words. She kept asking me if I would like to do a survey for her before speaking to a tech agent. I would try to answer her but she would repeat herself over and over. No, it wasn't a automated cust. rep. Finally I had to raise my voice and told her NO, I NO LIKE DO YOUR SURVEY!

    Hey! Linksys has great tech support 24/7 I've had to use them 4 times. I only had one foreigner help me out even though I had to REPEAT MYSELF MANY TIMES then wanted to PULL MY HAIR OUT cuz I couldn't understand him but I survived and got my router working.
