the DVD-RW that came in my box ( DVR104 ) worked like crap... the box of memorex I bought seperate worked fine though.

So I would guess it's the media until you get a chance to test with another disc.

  3. I have the Apex AD 5131, Bought last November so it may be different than yours of course...

It plays -R & +R & +RW, I have't tested a -RW on it yet, just fine for me... Even plays PAL as well as NTSC Video through my NTSC TV.

I'm thinking something in the way you authored (Backed-up) the source DVD....

I have noticed that the Apex and the Sony players work a little differently

Example if I put multiple titles on disk with TMPGenc DVD authoring program the chapter skip button works Ok to skip chapters, however the Sony when I hit the last chapter in a title won't go to the next title until the current title is finished and won't go backwards to a previous title. Whereas the Apex I can chapter button to a previous title or to the next title using the chapter skip buttons.

The Apex has more FF speeds, 4 vs 3 on the Sony, But the Sony's FF is faster.

    Tradeoffs.

So Good luck and investigate your process

  4. I also have an Apex and a sony. The sony does not play vcd or svcd and the apex plays anything just like it says on the box. But when i make a dvd backup on a dvd+r or dvd-r only the sony can play it not the apex.
    This is really buggin me

I have an Apex AD-5131 but it doesn't seem to play DVD+RWs??? I've tried different media - Verbatim and KHypermedia to no avail... I've tried different shinkers with no difference.... I'm using Nero 6 Ultra.... I've tried using the Burning Rom software and also using Recode2.... nada Any ideas? The same movie files work fine on DVD+R... I bought the player Dec. 2002... it doesn't specify on the box that it will play DVD+R/RW or DVD-R/RW...
