Okay folks, I've searched the forums long and hard but can't figure this one out. I realize, in order for DVD video to display correctly on a television, you must leave the video interlaced (capture, edit, encode, burn interlaced). But say, for instance, that after you capture the video, you want to apply some editing (using VirtualDub, for example). From what I understand, interlaced video won't display correctly on your computer screen. So how are you supposed to determine whether or not your video will display correctly on your television?

I guess my question is this: Is there a VirtualDub filter, or a different piece of software, that will allow you to de-interlace interlaced video then re-interlace that same video after you apply editing, filters, etc.

Is it possible to interlace de-interlaced video?

Most good editing programs take care of this for you. This includes making sure what you see if clear, and that you cut on a frame (2 fields) basis, not between fields. I use Vegas (and have used Premiere and Video Studio Pro) and have never had an issue with this.

I think you are making more of it than you need to. Do you have a specific instance in mind where this is a problem for you ?

No, there is no specific instance where this is a problem for me. I just want to make sure the video I "fix-up" will display correctly on my television. And since I'm going the cheap way (using almost all freeware programs), this is kinda hard to do. Thanks!!

If you are working purely in DV, you could look at the free version of the AVID editor. It is cut down in some features, but still pretty good for a freebie. But it is pretty much DV only.

I'm actually capturing video from a VCR. All analog baby. I'm sure I'll figure it out. It's just gonna take a little more tinkering. Thanks so much for your help!

  6. Progressive DVDs work fine on TV's. And on the PC the Software DVD-player de-interlace the video for you... However if you play it in Media Player it will not de-interlace..
