Ok, here's my story, i have an NEC-2500A that's said to be an 8x dvd burner, and it came with a few 4x discs, and those burned just fine at 4x, but i recently bought some dvd+r's that are rated at 8x, the manufacturer is Unifino, and when i try to burn to them it only lets me burn at 2.4 or 2.5x, does anyone know a reason, or way around this?

Your writer is capable of burning 4x media at 8x, but only with certain media and clearly Unifino is not one of them.
You could try update your firmware either orginal or hacked.
You can get the hacked version here:

I have the same burner and faced the same problem with Ritek 4X +R discs. Did what kyemeng suggested and flashed my firmware from v1.06, which came with the drive, to herrie's hacked firmware. I can now burn the same Ritek 4X discs at 8X with no read error.
However, I have never heard of Unifino. Don't know if the hacked firmware supports it.....
