PLextor 708A wont write dvds at 8X

Can't figure out why. I've upgraded the firmware, and have been using prodisc 8X media, but it still will not burn at 8X. Sometimes it even jumps down to 2X. I'm using Nero to burn my discs. Any tips are greatly appreciated.

What type of media are you using DVD- or DVD+? The 708A can NOT BURN 8x DVD- MEDIA, it can only burn 4x. As for the DVD+ MEDIA it can burn at 8x with using some 4x media such as IMATION (RICOH). I've burned many RICOH 4x DVD+ media @8x speed. Also note that PRODISC is not on the RECOMMENDED BRANDS that PLEXTOR supports.

I am using dvd- and I wasn't aware of that. Thank you for the info, it sheds some light on why, regardless of dvd- media I use, I couldn't get it to reach 8X. Thanks again!

Check and make sure that burn proof is off on what ever SW you are using to write with. This seems a bit obvious, but check and make sure that your SW hasn't limiting the drive speed to 4x. Sice you know that you are using 8x supported media, thats all I can think of.
