will read subtitles in the actual vob file(s) without having me extract them from an external program and then import them again? The latter seems kinda tedious.

nope. the subs are image files so the app need some kind of ocr tool then like in subrip. but you can use dvd-lab pro and import vobs with subs but you can't edit the subs then https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=220758
