Its known that some single layer burner will have trouble reading dual layer recordable disc. I guess they are taking quick action to solve that problem.

  5. I'm still using Firmware 2.0c and I've been burning at 4X since I got this burner more than 14 months ago.
Seems that more folks have trouble with their burners after updating firmware than the folks that leave it alone.
When I start using Duel Layred media, then I'll take the chance.
Thanks for the update and the link there Chopper20.

What a nightmare this writer is. I kept it for 2 days and returned it in exchange for the HP 8X Internal DVD+/-RW Drive Brand/Model: HP DVD420I which is the same price.. I got a fireware upgrade notice as soon as I installed , got it and voila it's working just fine. Sony sucks

  7. I've upgraded the firmware on this puppy like 5-6 times and never had a problem. I never even set it to PIO mode or whatever you're supposed to do before running the flasher. Burned about .....>350 dvd discs with it just fine.

In Nero 6, click on Recorder > Choose Recorder. Highlight your Sony and it should list the firmware version at the bottom. In Roxio, click Tools > CD Drive Properties and highlight your Sony. I will show you the firmware revision.
Nothing can stop me now, 'cause I don't care anymore.

  10. Thanks for the reply. It still says 1.0f instead of 2.1a. I just saved the firmware upgrade to my desktop and double clicked. There was some flashing, but i guess it didn't work. How do you upgrade correctly? thanks again.

  11. When you launch it & see your drive in the window you MUST push the SELECT button, if you don't, it just goes through the motions.

I cannot get my Sony to upgrade...I follow the instructions and it keeps saying "You must restart computer before updating drive". I restart it then rerun the program and keep getting the same message! Does anyone know how to bypass this?! I know I've done this before but can't remember how.

    Thanks in advance

There are many ways to measure success. You just have to find your own yardstick.

  13. Why are you rerunning the program? You shouldn't have to. Did you push the select button to select the drive to update? Sony has free online chat tech support on their website.
