  1. Next-generation DVDs are expected to deliver superior video and audio, although technology and media companies have yet to reach a consensus on which of the competing DVD formats will prevail as the industry standard.
Are they talking about HDDVD or is an interrum standard?

DVD_Ripper - Are they talking about HDDVD or is an interrum standard
    Hello,
I read it quickly in the morning. I believe they are talking about the copying of hddvd/bluray high density discs. Though it didn't seem to specify which format will receive the backup ok.

Actually, why would this matter? Unless they made it a rewritable disc {to record the dubbing usage} that could only be played on a pc with a net connection to report usage, there's no way to restrict copying.

I mean they can't do that with cds or dvds now. Once they're stamped they can be ripped infinitely. Only aac, wma and other encrypted audio can be fully restricted (even those can be bypassed).

However, I'm glad they're at least considering fair use backup. It's about time.

They are probably trying to head off Congress' attempt to water down the DCMA. If they can demonstrate that a user can have reasonable access to their properly licensed material, then they want the other ridiculous provisions of the DCMA to remain.
