  1. I tried the Sharp DV-HR300 at fry's and found turning on the machine takes at 20-30 seconds. I assume the machine is not defect. Also reading in a DVD/CD took about 15 seconds which also very slow.

How fast are other recorders like the JVC?

Here are some tests I did with Sharp regarding format support:

    Sharp DV-HR300:
    DVD+R: playback ok
    DVD-R: playback ok
    DVD-R PAL: disc not supported
    VCD-PAL: playback ok

  2. I have an M10S and the numbers you posted sound about right (I have "power save" set to "on", though).

Regardless, it doesn't matter much to me how long the machine takes to start up or read a disk. What I really care about is the delay after hitting the record button. I've read a few accounts of considerable lag times with other machines. My M10S, however, starts recording almost immediately after hitting the record button.

  3. So it takes 15-20 seconds on JVC as well to startup? I wonder why.
The Sharp might be because it's reading HDD contents.

Yes, but that's because I have "POWER SAVE" enabled. Thus, the machine sort of goes into hibernation; even the clock is inoperative. It takes a few extra seconds to "wake up".

    Plays DVD-R (NTSC I'm assuming);
    Won't play DVD-R (PAL) but will play VCD(PAL) ?

That doesn't seem logical to me - it either plays PAL or it doesn't I would have thought.
    If in doubt, Google it.

  6. This is the US version. Yes it seems weird it can play PAL SVCD but not PAL DVD. However I saw exactly same thing with an older JVC player.

    hmmm, very strange indeed.
    If in doubt, Google it.

  9. Desktop RCA takes about 10 seconds to read / recognize disk.

PC based TDK takes 6-10 seconds to recog disk

Ditto. But, as I stated earlier, apparently some recorders take several seconds (or longer) to start recording after the record button (on the remote or the unit) is depressed. Not good if that information is, indeed, accurate.

  11. Sure but the difference is huge. My JVC player takes max. 5 seconds (as does my computer sony burner). The Sharp in the store took at least 15 seconds (almost seems it was hanging). How long do the JVC recorders take to recognize the disc?

Yes pressing record should be ideally instant. With the Sharp I would miss at least 30 seconds if it was turned off.

I've been using -RWs and it takes about 15 seconds for my M10S to read them in.

You lost me. How, exactly, would you miss 30 seconds? I mean, if you were planning to record something (no matter what the source), wouldn't you already have the machine powered on and a disk loaded? Sorry, if I'm being obtuse here.

If I'm just turning on the TV and find something that I want to record and it's already running then you lose time.
But in general I found that the Sharp always reacted to the remote input with a lag (1 second). Quite annoying if the remote feels disconnected from what the machine is doing.

  14. I got it now (finally ). But, personally, if I were concerned about missing part of a show, I'd be looking at recorders with HDDs.
