  1. So I was finally able to create a dvd using ffmpegx, sizzle, and toast, and it works fabulously in the dvd players in my house except for my ps2. I thought maybe ps2s just don't read dvd-rs that well but I have the entire adventures of pete and pete on dvd-r and they work just great in the ps2. What happens is the following:

Put in disc, goes to menu just fine, but no sound on the menu and when I play an episode it shows video and sometimes audio, but then audio cuts out after a few seconds and then the entire image freezes. The frames seem to be jumpy as well.

I'm pretty baffled since it looks so beautiful on the other players and so horrible on the ps2, any suggestions?

From my personal experience the speed never made a real difference for me with burning movies (but definitely I noticed a differnce with music back in the day even tough the drives are getting better now but 52X for music is not advisable, anywho.......)

As far as the ps2 being used as a DVD player they can be kinda flaky at times. There are 10 different version of the PS2 at the moment.

Version 1-4 were kinda picky on what they would play since the lasers were not so great overall. (The majority of them have problems with DVD+R and cheap DVD-R media but there are exceptions)

Version 5-7/8 were a lot better but still not perfect (1-2 year old PS2s)

The current version 9 & 10 are supposed to be a lot better at playing DVD+R and DVD-R media

Try burning a disk using apple media and see what happens

I try to only use verbatim, apple, or ritek media (normally that is a good brand)

It all depends on how good your laser and your media is on the success at watching dvd movies on your PS2

  4. Did you know when playing a dvd on a ps2 & you push setup when playing you can adjust a few things?

I think its probably your writing speed, try 2x or 1x. Riteks are supposed to be okay on a ps2, but I didn't find them all that hot.

  5. I tried both 1x and 2x, same result, but it could definitely be because my ps2 is 1st generation. Got it within the first couple weeks they came out. *sigh*, alright, I'll take a bath on that one and just wait for my new dvd player to come in the mail. Thanks for your help guys.

its this simple, it depends on which model PS2 you have, if it will play +R's or -R's

That would depend on which model and year it came out. Some WILL play both while some will TRY and play both, since you are kinda having trouble with the -R, just try a +R and see what happens.

Mine will play some -R's but it loves +R's

  7. v1's use -r media only.

    v9, v 10's do +r

basically -r for games & dvds & you should be fine.

"Turn on the PS2, without a disk
in it & tray open, press the Triangle button to see the Version
info. Next screen, highlight the console #. Press the Triangle
button for options. On the next menu, turn the Diagnosis from Off to On.
Exit out of this menu. Put a CD game into the tray, close the tray, and
reset the PS2. The "diagnosis" actually just recalibrates the position of
the lens--which differs when reading CDs vs DVDs."

Thanks for your suggestion handyguy, but still no luck. Since I'm using ritek media(which i hear is good) and my PS2 is a v1, I'm assuming my PS2 is simply too old. dvd+r apparently won't work either and I don't plan on buying apple media since its so expensive. I'll just have to take my new player with me back to school in the fall along with/instead of my PS2.
