  1. Looking at the SVCD spec on both http://www.vcdhelp.com/svcd.htm and the Ulead site tips at http://www.ulead.co.uk/dvd/tips.htm they both state that SVCD is MPEG-2 Variable Bit Rate.

If I try and create a Variable Bit Rate SVCD using Media Studio Pro 6 I get an Error Message Unable to find encoder.

I am still waiting on a reply from Ulead Support. Initial reply said I should create a CBR SVCD. It plays OK on my Pioneer DVD player, but I'm hoping for improvd quality using VBR.

Has anyone else come across this, and or fixed it.

  2. The max bitrate is so low on SVCD's that it really doesn't matter much at all.

Encoding time, quality, and size were all essentially the same when I tested it with TMPGenc. 2-pass VBR took extra time.

Of course, I was looking for settings to compress an extremely difficult scene, so maybe it's not a good test.

  3. MSP V6.0 encoder does not support SVCD. It is one of the new features of V6.5 see: http://www.ulead.com/msp/new.htm. However, if you got the DVD plug-in it does support VBR if you apply the DVD power patch. Encode your VBR SVCD with TMPGEnc or Ligos LSX35 and author and burn with the DVD plug-in.

The only advantage of VBR is the potential reduction in the mpeg file size. In the tests I have run the reduction in file size between VBR and CBR was insignificant.
