Here in south Florida, Papa John's is giving away("While supplies last") one of three DVD titles with the purchase of a large pizza at the regular menu price. UNFORTUNATELY, the three titles are DonJuan DeMarco, Trial and Error and Weekend at Bernies. They also offer 4 Musicmatch download "free" with the $4 purchase of 4 20oz. Coke products. I like the concept, but I think I would rather get a coupon to rent a movie free from a local video store, so I could choose the title.

They've started that in Phoenix, AZ at least a few weeks ago. Looks like the movies (Don Juan anyway) are reauthored to 2 channel sound, and shrunk to a DVD5. Also, there are a bunch of previews at the start that you can't fast forward through. Comes in a vinyl sleve, no box or cover.

Anyway, looks like it's meant for a pizza and beer night so you don't have to go pick up a movie, or return it. Get your own case if you want to put it on your shelf. Cool idea I think, but be wary if you're a movie buff and always buy superbit.

As for selection, they advertised several different ones for later this summer, so you probably get some refresh every so often.

On a similar note, Me and my friends were stocking the freezers at work and when we got to the frutopia we noticed they had some cupon on it fro $5 free mp3 downloads from some site I forgot were each song is $1 so thats basically 1 free song. we were laughing so hard hehe. I think ill continue to get my free mp3s thankyou. I actually bought the frutiopia (too drink) and I just threw away the cupon cause I dont need it.

  5. Were they actually giving away a burned DVD-R copy? Gee, I wonder how long they'd get away w/ that before the MPAA starts breathing down their back?

doubt it - I'm sure it was a promotional tie-in with the movie company, where they provide cut-down cheap versions (hey, it's like free advertising... if you like the movie a lot, you'll go and buy the regular store version).

I did this with Pizza Hut a few months ago, got a copy of Mr. Mom in the paper sleeve.

No, forgot to mention it's a pressed disc. The reason the movie studios do this kind of thing is to encourage you to buy more stuff. As housepig said, it's cheap/free advertising for them.

You may want 5.1/better video/a case with a real printed cover - not everyone has the capability to make a case/cover. On that note, cover sites are like the mp3 web sites of yesteryear that are saturated with porn popups and spyware... not everyone is willing to go that extra mile.

All in all, if it's a movie you wouldn't normally get, and you want something to watch, it's a cool concept.

As a concept, it's kinda neat. As a promotion, it's completely free advertising for New Line. The Don Juan DeMarco disk has no menu at all. The previews and the movie are a single title set. There are chapters, but the previews don't allow fast forwarding or skipping. The movie is old, but the previews are for brand new attractions. (The Notebook, Laws of Attraction, Elf.)

    And the movie is fullscreen.

I can't complain about a freebie (although that pizza was pretty darn expensive), but the reason it's free is those previews. The disk itself isn't really much like the version you'd pay for.
