  1. Here's my problem: I have an ati aiw pro and it has 2 firewire inputs- one at the back of the computer and one on the break away box. I just bought a Panasonic GS14 mini dv camcorder and am trying to get video to my computer via firewire. However, when I try to capture via the firewire it doesn't record anything, and the preview is just black. However I am still able to control the camera (rewind, FF, play) from the computer. When I first tried it did record about 2 seconds of audio/video but then went blank. I don't know if I need a special driver for my camcorder to get this to work or should I buy a new firewire card? My computer is a 1 gighz Duron processor, 40 gig hard drive, 512 mb ram.
Can someone please tell me what's wrong here? The main reason I bought this camera was to edit video on my computer.

You could always skip the firewire and use the analog capture abilities of the AIW *shrug*

What software are you using to cap?

  3. I'm using Vegas Video 5. I also tried capturing through a program called editstudio but had same results with that. The analog capture through the AIW is pretty crappy quality (even with S-Video), so trying to steer clear of that.

maybe try dvio, it's simple and free... caps DV format AVI... Then you can open it in Vegas.

Really not sure whats up with your AIW firewire... I've used cheepo firewire pci cards ($20-$40) and mobo firewire connections without a hitch? Plug-n-play...

Funny that you would dog ATI's analog cap! Why did you drop the cash on a AIW?? *puzzled* A pci firewire card ($30) + a ATI 9200se ($80) = $100 in your pocket...

Ps. that 40 gig drive will be filled in a heartbeat... You may want to look into some storage too...

  6. I "dropped" the "cash" on the AIW about a year ago when I had a HI8 camcorder without firewire. Back then it worked ok for what I was doing but I can't say the results were flawless. Now I've upgraded and figured I could use my new camcorder with the firewire port on the AIW but I don't see the point it even has one if it doesn't work.
