  1. I have 2 computers, both running xp..both using nero/nero express to copy dvd's.

the burner i have is a cendyne 4X burner.

I used to swap this between both computers, an either use shrink to back up, and tmpgenc author to burn...or use nero, or nero express to copy a dvd. both methods with no problems at all.

yesterday afternoon i was copying a homemade dvd, when windows shut down, then popped back on saying "windows has just recovered from a serious error". Now neither computer will recognize my dvd burner as a dvd burner. it still recognizes it as a dvd.cd-r/rw rom..but not as a burner.

I have tried the system restore, to a known safe period. I have also tried uninstalling/reinstalling, enable/disable.

    can anyone help me?

  2. Since both computers fail to recognize the unit as a DVD Burner, then I think the problem is with the burner. Try flashing the burner’s firmware

Have you checked your BIOS to see if the drives are being recognized? Set BIOS to AUTO to detect the drives automatically. Also check to see if the drives are DMA enabled.

    * EDIT* I wouldn't flash the burner. Check the BIOS to see if the drive is being recognized first.

how do i go about checking the bios?

It see's it as a NEC DVD RW/CD-R drive, but nero wont see it as a dvd rw drive.

    if that makes sense

When you start your computer, press a key (usually DEL) as it is starting. Within about three seconds of it turning on. That should bring up the BIOS.

You may want to uninstall NERO then use the NERO CLEAN TOOL. Then reinstall the NERO EXPRESS. Here's link for it:

  7. thank you..I was thinking it was nero..although i had uninstalled. then reinstalled nero earlier to no avail. Tmpgenc dvd authors dvd writing program recognized the burner and burned with no problem.

i'll try this an let you guys know..

    thanks again for your help.

  8. well tried that, and now nero will see the dvd burner..but it wont let me choose a different source, and destination drive.

so now i cant copy on the fly...which kind of defeats the purpose of having the second dvd rom in.

What would be the point of copying on the fly, anyway?

Fair enough then. I've never burned anything on the fly simply because I can run burns at much faster speeds without the risk of buffer underruns if the files are on the hard drive. I wasn't even aware it was possible to copy encrypted DVDs on the fly.

  13. nilf: the point to copying on the fly would be to save wear and tear on the laser in the dvd burner. This wasnt a copy encrypted dvd. and i didnt have the files on my hd.

budz: it shows both now, i took the burner out, and set it to master, and now it lets me copy on the fly.
