Difference between asf and wmv?

I searched a lot but but didn't find somthing that explains the differnce.I have some progs that accept asf files as input but not wmv.How can I convert wmv files to asf/AVI/MPG?
My windows media encoder output files all have wmv extension.And I wonder what encodes asf.
ASFTools can't convert my wmv files to AVI.I don't know why.
I think there is no prog that can convert these windows media files to any other format.
So far I have not found something that converts wma files as well.
ANY HELP is greatly appreciated.

I think TMPGENC will do it. When you open video part use the all files option to see your wmv file and then select it.
