To elaborate, both of these packages are editing applications only. If want an opinion of which is best for editing, I suggest you post in the editing forum. Both of these packages do have stablemates that do author - DVD Architect 2 partners with Vegas, Adobe Encore with Premiere. You try asking about those here instead.

  7. You understand that you'll just get personal opinions on this question, right?

Personal preference...Vegas 4 or 5 with DVDA 1 or 2. This was a no brainier

  10. It's a toss up for me...

You have more control with Pro, but I feel I can be more creative with Vegas. Pro has more advanced title features, but Vegas has better sound editing features.

One big advantage that Vegas has over Premiere, is that Vegas is by far a more stable program.

I doubt any one is that much better than the other. I'm a Premiere fan and can do anything I want with Premiere. I know many people prefer Vegas. I even tried it once on a freinds PC, though I couldn't make heads or tails out of it. I guess I'm just too used to doing things the Premiere way. Vegas looked totally forein to me.

I'd say it all boils down to the one your comfortable with. After all, if you can't work with it, it's useless.

there are a lot of transistions in both , maybe a few more in vegas -- but in real movie making , its very rare that you use more than about 3 or 4 transistions ...

for some special effect advertising or wedding or rock videos yes -- maybe , though even then it can look like its out of the 70/80's

here is a sample of some composting and editing all done in vegas 4 that i did .. http://www.vegasusers.com/vidshare/textdisp?bjm-simex_iwerks_sm33

you can see a lot of vegas examples here http://www.vegasusers.com/vidshare/ (note - NOT streaming video - you have to right click and save and watch cus they are comming off a fairly slow server)

stonefield-dancinstreet.wmv at that site is a real good one ..

I'm downloading your clip now. It'll be over an hour before I can see it (dail-up sucks!). I'd love to post some of my work, but Dail-up prohibits it. Not to mention, I don't have web storage.

Can't wait to see your work, though.

    Nice work BJ_M .

Did you do it all within Vegas? I smell a little After Effects, like maybe the shine on filter on the text at the beginning.

What did you use for the 3-d rendering, or are they caps from a video game?

    All in all, good stuff!

I'm pretty sure Premiere could easily handle it as well, though.

Vegas' interface is totally foreign to just about any editing program out there. Most of the controls are right there on the clip in the video line (ie. fade, slow motion, pan/zoom etc.) It took me awhile to get use to that, since Premier's controls are down below or almost hidden. Once you get use to it, though, you'll love it.

Vegas gets a bad rap from the high end users like Avid or Final Cut, but it is one hell of a good program.

Sheryl Crow just did a video and performance on a United Airlines flight from Chicago to LA. Not only did the editing with Vegas 5 take place on the plane, but the performance was recorded as well. This concert in the sky was a shot on five Sony XDCam cameras then the discs were handed to the editor (Timothy Duncan) with less than an hour before landing. He was able to digitize five camera angles of almost five minutes each and do a multi-camera edit on his lap-top delivering a four and a half minute finished music video on both DV and Hi-8 including showing the video to Sheryl for approval. Just after landing, the tape was uplinked via satellite as part of a huge press event for Sony Connect and United Airlines.
No one could believe that it could be done and delivered that quickly.

Then during the cab ride over to Sony Music for a grand finalle party, He did color correction on one of the camera angles and delivered a DVD that was shown during the party. Thier team worked together very well to make this possible. Can you imagine a steadycam on a plane? Plus lights and portable sound system? It was amazing.

Vegas got a lot of press on this one as the press filmed the editor working on his laptop during the fast production.

I also prefer Vegas for it's audio abilities. It is incredibly quick and easy to set up a multi-channel (5.1) sound track with keyed panning from channel to channel - and it is a visual process as well. I understand Premiere Pro's audio capabilites are an improvement on previous versions, but they don't seem to be anywhere near Vegas. (Plus almost seamless integration with Sound Forge)

  25. ive been editing with vegas for almost two years. countless short films and other nonsense. i've used premiere, avid, but none of them had the speed or compatibility that vegas had. you can open anything in vegas...avi, mpeg 1,2, mov, wmv. many other NLEs are limited.

I'm editing my full length with it this summer. I recommend it to everybody. I love vegas.

  26. well i picked up premiere pro and started doing stuff with it real easily... i dont know why but i just understood a lot of stuff and the help file explained a lot... i figured i had heard a lot about vegas so i would check it out, but daaaang i turned it on and was just confused... i really couldn't do much, but oh well maybe i should invest some time in learning it first before judging it.. it just looks kinda hard to me and i dont know if i should stick with premiere pro which i am starting to get the hang of good or switch over to vegas

for authoring, i like Ulead DVD Workshop 2. it has 5.1 support, multiple VTS support, and 3 of my personal favorites: Macrovision, CSS, and Region lockout. No, i'm not some crazy person who copy-protects home videos, I run a video business, so if a person tries to copy a DVD, the simple noob wont be able to without researching. In turn, that means more profit for me (i charge $15 per additional DVD after the 1st one)!
