You can use the forum's bitrate calculator here https://www.videohelp.com/calc
You don't say how long your films is, or what resolution it currently is. If it already at a low resolution, you may not get much of an improvement increasing the resolution to full D1, and may even find that the quality appears worse because it will show up more problems not as visible at the lower res.

Bottom line, garbage in = garbage out

  3. The sixe (dimensions) of your video make absolutely no difference when it comes to bitrate. What's most important is the type of video, is there a lot of action/flashes/fast moving scenes... or is it slow changing?

The more action, the more bitrate needed simple as that.... doesn't matter if the video is 1600x1200 or 352x480.

Length of the video also matters in the sense that a higher bitrate, yields a larger file. So if you've got 2 hours of high action video, you can't have a bitrate of 9.0 and expect it to fit on a DVD.

Wrong. There is a bell-curve for bitrate needs at a certain resolution.
