  1. Hey all!

I was working with my Panny E50 last night, had finished a disk (Maxell DVD-R on 4 hour mode) and went to finalize.

Half way through, it stopped, said finalizing failed.

It will still play fine in the E50, but not in the RV31 standalone I have. In addition, it comes up as being a DVD-V on the E50's front panel, and the 5 min chapter stops are inserted correctly.

What could have caused this? Any idea?

I've gotten the same thing on my E50. It's usually caused by cheap media, but that's not the case with yours. Maxell is the second-best media out there according to Lordsmurf. Unless your media is counterfeit Maxell

Did you try to power down, reinsert and try again? I've sometimes gotten stubborn DVD-Rs to finalize after several attempts, then all is well.

  3. No, it's not a counterfeit. It's one out of a 10 pack that I bought a few weeks ago.

I haven't tried the power down thing. There were a few flecks on the disk, however. I don' t know what they are or why I didn't see them before, but they are on there.

    Would that do it?

I'll try the power down thing.

They might if there are enough of them. Usually a few flecks on it won't do too much damage, but then again, it depends on how sensitive the machine is. Best thing is to use like a t-shirt or some similar material and lightly sweep outward from the center to the edge.

Also, the E50 has a reset mode you can use by holding in the power switch for about 10 seconds. And there's another way to clear stubborn lock-ups - pull the plug for about 30 minutes.

My Panasonic E80 does the same thing from time to time (not too often, though!). Best thing is to wait a while and try to finalize the disc again. I've waited a couple of days, tried to finalize it again, and it works. This has only happened on a couple of discs -- must be a trait of the machine or something.

  6. It happened to me one time I have the E80 and I had the video still on the hard drive so i just burner another copy. I never Delete from the hard drive until the Finalizing of the DVD-R is finished.

  7. I noticed I can get my E-50 to fail if I hit the start button twice by mistake when I go to finalize. Ever since I have paid more attention I have had no problems. A very touchy machine!
Still a few bugs in the system...

I had an experience with mine this weekend. I was trying to remove a disc it had choked on during timer recording. It was a Ridata matte silver DVD-R. The machine showed "CLOSE" on the display, but operating the drawer button wouldn't release it. Powering down by using the reset function, then powering up just caused the "RECOVER" display and then another lock-up. Same thing when I pulled the plug for 15 minutes.

I found a way to get it to release any disc: With the power on, hold in the power button until it appears to power down and the clock shows. Then just press the drawer button once. It'll go through the recover mode, and then eject the disc. Then you have to close the drawer and power down with no disc in. This completes the reset.

My problem was that I kept trying to get it to reset with the failed disc in. The E50 is touchy and won't do that until it's empty. I guess it keeps trying to salvage the disc that's in there until you remove it.
