You have to author the DVD files before you burn to DVD- then they'll be mpeg files and not avi files. The chapter information goes into IFO files which are created when the disk is authored.

Wow. Try it again after you find it. It'll probably work better then. (Did you look behind your monitor?)

  3. Well, what are you doing? Are you converting the avi to mpeg2 to create a DVD that will play on most standalones? Or are you just thinking you are going to burn the avi file to a DVD disk (which will only play on your computer and possibly some of the new MPEG4 capable DVD Players, dependent on the codec used within the avi file)?

AVI files don't support chaptering that I'm aware of, but a DVD compliant project using MPEG2 files certainly can through the use of one of the many authoring tools available. If it is your intention to have this DVD play on most standalone players, then this is the path you must follow anyways.

If you let us know the source of the avi file (DV Camera, DivX encode, etc), and how you plan to use the end result, we can give you much more specific answers.
