  3. Check out a new guide posted to this site today:

    http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/dv/guide.html

It covers your question and more.

I have several available because they come as bundled with hardware. I usually use Pinnacle Studio 8.12. Then I save back as a DV file and bring into TMPEGEnc for encoding, and then to TMPEGEnc DVD Author to author.

You need a DV codec to open the file in Virtual Dub.

Have a look in the tools section under codec's.

  6. Be careful when choosing what codec to use for your DV files. There are 3 of them I think and all of them handle noise differently. Read about it over at http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=e5216561e5c9b265ff3c58ac714d20d9&threadid=33526

There are plenty of programs to simply "chop down the size " that are very easy. They can split, join, and save captured video into separate files or combine files, as needed . And then can quickly save back to a DV file. (Pinnacle, Ulead, Cyberlink)

In my opinion, VirtualDub is not the easiest or the best for a newbie to do these things.

VirtualDub however is the easiest and the best for a newbie for post processing (applying filters, resizing and frame serving to an encoding program).
