DivX to VCD convert problem using TMPGEnc Plus/TMPGEnc DSC

I have problem converting DivX to VCD source clip.

I have a movie clip in DivX and avi extention format so not sure it is really avi or Divx format but when I click directly on the clip I see only sound with like 3 seconds of video and the rest is black without any images, just sound. When I put this clip in TMPGEnc Plus (latest version)
and try to encode it to VCD source, I get a clip without video when it's done. I also tried TMPGEnc DVD Source Creator (DSC) and it came out with the same result. Wondering what went wrong?

1. Is it because I don't have the the codecs to watch it therefore can't encode it?

2. Or it doesn't matter whether you can or can't watch if you encode it the correct way in order to convert to a working VCD clip? So are watching and encodeing separate issues and not related to the codecs or but of these these need to have codecs in order to watch and to encode?

3. What kind of codecs if it's the case that I need it in order to watch or to encode, to have and how to install/test to make sure that it's properly running?

4. So when you see a clip and you right click on it and see the "Properties" and under "Type of file" it says AVI, is it really AVI or DivX or Xvid for that matter? Any way to test to know it's what and what. Sorry about asking silly thing but I don't understand much about this matter.

Test your divx-encoded avi with Gspot. I had a similar problem like you describe and fixed it by installing the latest divx 5 codec.

BTW, avi is an extension for a file type that can contain video and audio created using any one of a number of different codecs.

You will need to install only the codecs (coder-decoder) required to open and play back your files. You can have many codecs installed, but it's best to avoid codec packs as they can result in conflicts. Gspot is the tool to tell you the required codecs.

You can encode to VCD, which is mpeg1, but you may need to install a codec in order to decode the source file.
