I have an XVid avi file of 640 x 368. Is it wise to convert this to an mpeg2 file (720x576) file for on a DVD-R?

Try it on a small bit of the file. If it comes out OK then yes if it comes out crap then no.

Its probably OK to encode that file to a single DVD, and its resolution indicates that it should be almost perfect aspect ratio if encoded to 16:9. Just be sure to use high enough bitrate when encoding without exceeding 4.37 GB total.

I've converted files with that resolution to 720x480 VBR 6000 Kbps(8000 max, 6000 AVG, 2500 min); they look pretty good viewed on a 36 inch screen - the picture quality suffers a bit when compared to the source file, but it still is an improvement over VHS.
