  1. Hi guys. I just got an ATI All in Wonder 9800 pro. I'm sure some of you guys have the same card and do the same thing that I want to do. Basically, I want to set something up to record in a high quality format, then edit out the commercials, then encode into divx or xvid or something that wont take up 2 gigs per hour. The program that the card came with (Pinnacle Studio 8 ) seems to work really bad. I captured something, then it tookforever to divide it into clips, then after I cut out half the video, the resulting file was the same size and even worse quality.

What format should I capture in knowing that its not gonna be final and that I'm gonna edit out commercials and then re-encode. I'm looking for a good quality format here so I don't care if it takes 2 gigs / hour here.

What program should I use to edit out the commercials? I've been trying boilsoft splitter / joiner and it seems to be nice and not re-encoding the whole thing when I do it.

What program is good for converting from a high quality format to a high compression format for my final result?

    Thanks in advance
    ~Eric

  2. Sounds like you need help with more than 1 step of the process. Theres a link to guides on the left, and theres even special guides for ATI AIW users: https://www.videohelp.com/guides.php?howtoselect=9#9;45

  3. Okay, one of those links helped my first question. I guess I will use huffyuv to capture. I assume I should capture in the same resolution my final file will be in.

But now that its in that format...what program should I use to edit out the commercials that won't re-encode the whole thing?

And then once thats done is there a good program to convert the huffyuv into divx / xvid or something else?

Or, is there a program where after I've captured into huffyuv that will do both...cut commercials and re-encode?

Virtualdub can do both, after cutting just click the menu Video - Compression you can chose DivX or Xvid, then click the Configure button to set encoding quality and so on. Then when done you could click on File - Save as AVI.

If you use an ATI card, most of my site is required reading. Check out all the capture articles, and then the ATI capture guides. Then head on down to the commercial EDITING guides afterwards.

  6. I second that. I capture in mpg format with my ATI AIW 7500 and edit out commericals with Womble. Results are great and the process is quick. All explained in detail on Lord Smurf's site.

    I'll second that second!

I was new to this video stuff. Found Smurf's site, read everything over about 3 times and came up with a process that works perfect for me.

    FWIW:
    1: Record mpg with MMC
2: Edit commercials out with Womble
3: Clean noise and color correct with TMPGenc
    4: Re-encde to WMV with WME 9

This is just MY process for recording 1/2 hour episodes of my favorite cartoon until they all come out on DVD. My 22 min episodes get down to about 100MB each [320x240 wmv]. These are perfect for me watching on my pc for now. In fact the image is sooo nice it rivals the current episodes on the dvds I already have
