I remember watching alot of VHS tapes when I was young, and at the beginning of the tape you hear something that sounds like "speed dial" on a telephone. Has anyone else heard this noise before and know what it is?

Never noticed that on VHS tapes, but if it is similar to touchtones from a phone, it's probably a series of numbers to indicate, the batch number?, serial number?, date of recording?, or somthing like that. Just a guess, though.

That was a studio testing audio pattern, sort of like the video testing patterns. This is how it was always described to me. But it was a cheapo reproduction if it made it onto the final copy (should have only been on the master).
