I'm recording VHSC tapes (30 minutes in length) to DVD+R (4.37GB) using a Panasonic VCR/DVDRecorder(DVDR) combo unit (model no. DMR-EA38V). The problem is that the DVDR does not record content properly after a white noise section on the VHSC tape. The white noise on the VHSC tape was caused when the Palmcorder (Panasonic Model no. PV-D300d) was turned off, and then back on to continue recording on the same tape. When playing the VHSC tapes on a VCR the breaks in recording show as a few seconds of white noise on the TV and then the content begins to display again.

This is what happens on the DVDR unit just prior to a white noise section on the VHSC tape:
DVDR is coping and unit display shows "COPY", then the white noise section is reached on the VHSC tape and DVDR displays "LR", then it goes to "--" and then back to "COPY" for the rest of the content on the VHSC tape. This will happen during every white noise section. Even though the DVDR appears to be recording after a white noise section (display shows, "COPY") when I play the finalized DVD+r there is no content other than a few seconds of white noise. In one instance the DVDR recorded 30 seconds of white noiese instead of the remaining four minutes of content on the VHSC tape.

The DVDR records properly if I manually stop the coping just before the white noise, forward the VHSC tape position to just beyond the white noise and then begin the recording. What I wanted was a DVDR combo unit that could copy my VHSC tapes "as is", white noise and all. I'm not looking to perform any editing, just to copy my VHSC tapes before they start to degrade.

I read on another site that a recording feature of another Panasonic VHS/DVDRecorder combo unit (DMR-EZ48VK DVD) that treats any break in the incoming video as the signal to divide the content into discrete segments. They said the feature can't be disabled on the DVDR and the artificial breaks can result in a loss of content which makes it difficult for those who just want to use if for transferring home movies to DVD, which is what I want.

    QUESTIONS:
    - Is there another VCR/DVDRecorder combo unit that does not have this problem?

    - Is there a configuration setting on my DVDR I can use to get it to just record the VHSC tape, "as-is" and not treat the white noise as a break in content?

    - Any other suggestions?

    Thanks for your help!!

The signal is not continuous, and the machine shuts off. You need a timebase corrector (TBC) between the player (camera or VCR) and the recorder (DVD recorder or computer capture card).
