  1. I have a quick question about encoding in general. If you captured at full D1 & then converted that to VCD, would it be possible to reclaim that DVD quality by re-encoding the VCD to DVD? Whether yes or no, could you tell me why?

  2. No, the information is lost for ever when you encode to a lower bitrate.

  3. no

the reason why is say you have a block of legos. full size block is made of many of them -720x 480. you decide its too damn big. so you take half of them away and since you are kin to houdini you make them dissapear.

days later you wish you had your old big block back? but you cant make nothin from nothin.

when down encoding the file is compressed, frames are compressed and removed. that is why you see such pixelization and jerkiness.the computer essentially loses that information and to encode it back up would make it look even worse as its now stretching the file you previously compressed and its also fight to fill frames where info was left out.

its best to save a hi-res original and with it you can make lo-res vcds or wmvs or whatever you like but if you ever want to use the hi-res you have it.i save a hi-res on my hd or to disc and make lo-res copies as needed

You CAN re-encode to 352x480 from 352x240, and add filters in the process, which may be able to fix some problems. But it won't be magic, no.
