  1. everytime I try to record a vhs rental to my comp from my ati capture it messes up. When im capturing it , it looks fine but after about 10 secs it gets a little darker but still looks fine, Than when I go to play it back after about 10 secs it gets dark and than it repeats like the 3 secs of the movie part its on over and over, but the audio is still playing. The strange thing is you can see a very tiny part of the movie it's soposed to be playing at the top. Does anyone else have this problem , if so know how to fix it? I've tried different vhs rentals and I tried different setting and everything. My normal vhs record normal to my comp like concerts I recorded and stuff, please someone help!

  2. Most (if not all) rental vhs tapes have copy protection in them. Like microvision. The ati capture board has this feature also and will not let it record correctly. This is why a vhs that you record (without protection) works and your rentals do not.

  3. That would be "macrovision".

  4. I had the same problem. I bought a "Optex Video Stabilizer" for $50 Canadian, from futureshop here in Canada, I don't know where you live, (Seattle maybe ? - Nirvana reference) but you should be able to find a similar product if you look around. It's intended for improving the quality of copying your CamCorder homemovies to standard VHS, a nice side effect is it fixes the macrovision Fading in and out and allows me to make copy VHS > VHS and DVD > VHS.

Of course, to buy a VHS Movie these days isn't that expensive, when you add up the cost of the rental & the blank tape is it worth it ? The original tape will always be better quality than a second generation copy...but, there you have it. The product is listed on futureshops website too.

Enter the WebID number 06041760 into their advanced search and it'll list the product.

    Hope this helps.

  5. Hi, I've had the exact same problem as you. But I've fixed the problem without having to buy any hardware. There's a file within the ATI files which is a driver that activates Macrovision if it sees the signal. There's a patch you can download which modify's the driver so it doesnt active at all (doesnt work for TV-OUT). I'll try and find the link somewhere. Its on an old topic in here.

  6. I've found it

    http://www.doom9.org/Soft21/Files/DisableATIMacrovisionDetection.zip

The drawback to this program is that there a several different Macrovision signals, and this patch disables the detection of only one type.

This patch will allow you to capture copy protected video from a VCR to via the yellow video-in connector. However, you may see some color banding at the top of your capture, and some skewing at the bottom. (Macrovision does not affect audio signals.)

You will NOT be able to capture via the S-Video in, as that uses a different Macrovision signal.

You will NOT be able to capture output from a DVD player, as they use still another type of Macrovision signal.

An alternative to Doom9's patch is a video clarifier. Sima sells two kinds that can be bought at Best Buy and/or Circuit City. These "clean up" an incoming video signal, and depending on what version you buy, can eliminate some or all Macrovision signals.

But this should solve ur VHS problem.
