I heard that AIW cards encode their own kind of MPG files, that stand- alone DVD players have trouble playing the mpg's after burning. Is this true and does that mean reencoding in TempGenc(a waste of time) is necessary. Could you just demux/mux in TempGenc and then burn in order to get rid of the AIW glich. I have just gotten a new computer, with an AIW 9800 Pro card. I would sure not like to waste time if the above is true and I can be preemptive. There is no forum like this one for getting the facts. I really appreciate it.

I've never had any problems. You might be thinking of the proprietary .VCR format that you can save the MMC MPEGs in.

I've burnt many dozen dvd's made from captures created by an ATI card, and haven't had any problems with 'acceptance' on standalone players.
Any of the supplied dvd capture templates should work fine. If you decide to create a new one or edit and existing, be cautious when you arrive at the GOP page where you can change I-Frames, B-Frames, etc.. That's one setting that can 'invalidate' the MPG2 file as far as some authoring programs are concerned.
by the way, if you're new to capturing>authoring>burning dvd's, you WILL spend quite a bit of "extra" time getting the process right....accept it as worthwhile self-instruction.
I found that single-malt scotch was a necessary adjunct to the process. -
I recently upgraded, and got a aiw 9600 pro. Made a few DVD's from captured MPG2's, and no problem playing back.
Problem I did have was trying to use tmpgenc's dvd author to read my AIW MPG2's. It complained about a missing header file, sometimes. Had to process though tmpgenc to fix, but I later decided to go with dvd lab for authoring, and have no problem there.

If you use anything older than ATI MMC 7.7, yes.

I've also had trouble with the .mp2 format on captures using AIW 9700 pro, I used LordSmurfs guides and the quality was great however the authored discs would play on my cheesy Initial "DVD anywhere" portable
but not on my standalone Pioneer DV440, I haven't been happy with the results if I re-encode with TMPEnc because you're further compressing a file that has already been compressed once by the AIW, I've resorted to AVI capture then TMPEnc, however that is time consuming as you have already noted, apparently the .mp2 file format is not universally accepted. -

lordsmurf,
in regards to your previous post, When I launch the TV player it displays version 8.0 on the splash screen, does this mean it is actually version 7.7?, I also goofed on the file extension it is ".m2p", I downloaded version 8.8 (quite a feat for a poor country boy on dial-up) and it immediately didn't like my Radeon drivers. So far other than the playback issue my current setup is rock stable, if anyone could answer the version question it would be greatly appreciated,
PS Kudo's to lordsmurf for all the EXCELLENT info on his site...! -

<If it is missing a sequence header for each gop, there is easy fix. in tmpgenc goto file>mpeg tools>merge and cut. Load the video, choose stream type mpeg2 program vbr, add the video, and write out a new file.
This will put the headers in there automatically.>
No way to choose stream type mpeg2 program vbr in merge & cut. Instruction is not clear. What if it is mpeg1? I think you mean use multiplex-in mpeg tools. That's similar to the SVCD to VCD trick and makes sense as you have many options. -

choose your file.....let's say it was an MPG2 with improper GOP that TDA would reject. At the top of the Merge & Cut box is a pulldown list under Type:. You then choose MPEG-2 Program(VBR), designate output and boom!....you have a file that TDA will now accept.
Just for curiosity, I ran an MPG2 through, picked MPEG-1 Video-CD as the type and created a new file that that AVICodec reads as an MPG1 VCD. Obviously the bitrate is much higher then a standard VCD and the audio is still 48Khz, so I'm not sure that a functioning VCD could be made from it.
But you can quickly 'correct' video files this way.
