  1. Here's a new one I haven't come across before: I have a Divx file that I can play on my PC normally, but when I try to convert to VCD/SVCD in Tmpgenc, here's what I get:

(Image is broken into horizontal strips with different colors.)

    Does anyone have any ideas?

    Thanks in advance

It looks like abstract art! Do you have FFDSHOW installed?

  3. lol...it's actually a view of a large crowd of people although you probably wouldn't be able to tell by looking at it .

To answer your question: no, I just have the official Divx5 and Xvid 1.0. Both Avicodec and Gspot read the file as Divx5. Do you think i should install ffdshow? I had it a while back but uninstalled it bc it was creating too many problems. What's weird is that the file plays just fine, it's just transcoding it (or even previewing it in Tmpgenc or DVD2SVCD) that creates this problem.

Installing FFDSHOW again might be worth a shot, yes. The good thing about it is that should you decide to keep it, you can configure it to decode or not decode the relative 4cc's it handles to suit your needs. I'd rather use the native Divx and Xvid decoders too for playback but sometimes I have FFDSHOW handle them strictly for re-encoding to mpeg.

  5. OK, sure, I'll give it a try. Just out of curiosity: You mentioned you use ffdshow for decoding but native xvid and divx for playback. This may sound dense, but can you switch between codecs like that without uninstalling? How would I go about doing that?

    Thanks again,

    DF

Edit: OK, forget about what I just said, it just got weirder. Here's the result with ffdshow installed:

Just open the FFDSHOW configuration utility and adjust as needed:

  7. Don't know if you saw my edit bc we posted almost simultaneously: Have a look at the new image after ffddshow above. This just gets stranger and stranger

What more do you want? FFDSHOW got rid of the color bars, didn't it? Well it looks like you should disable Divx 5 decoding first. The only thing I can think of is trying to change the 4cc used. If it currently uses DX50 or divl(or something like that), try changing it to DIVX. If that doesn't work, try frameserving from Virtualdub, that is if it's able to decode it correctly. If you manage to find another solution let me know. I'm off to bed now, so good luck!
